Latest Reviews from the Road

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all of you who have come out to the shows so far this year.

Appreciate it has been pretty cold, especially in Oslo, Glasgow and Bradford.

Here are a couple of reviews from two of the January concerts.

See you all in Scotland this weekend.

– Lou and Michael

Jan 19th Glasgow, Oran Mor, Celtic Connections Festival:

Full review here.

Jan 25th Oslo, Vulkan Arena, Interstate 19 Festival:

“Prior to the festival, I knew nothing about the British duo My Darling Clementine other than having heard their name, but I understood that they are among the UK’s foremost country performers.

The band is a project for the couple Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish. Weston King, I know well as both a solo artist and leader of the band The Good Sons – a musical melting pot reminiscent of Clive Gregson (from the legendary Stiff Records band Any Trouble) and, for that matter, more recent Nick Lowe. Dalgleish has, amongst other things, played with Bryan Ferry, and The Brodsky Quartet.

Together, they are both a great country duo and a comedy double-act – with a quite brilliant band behind them.

I realise now that I have to listen to the three albums of My Darling Clementine, based on the fact that they played a number of brilliant songs such as “Friday Night, Tulip Hotel”, “Since I Fell For You”, the Tom T. Hall Tribute “Going Back To Memphis”, and offered an alternative view of abusive relationships to Tammy Wynette in the shape of “No Matter What Tammy Said (I Won’t Stand By Him)”.

This is, simply, an excellent example of the great art of songwriting, and it was amazing to see them live.”

Full, original text (in Norsk) and some photos of the festival can be found here.

RING IN THE NEW – The My Darling Clementine Newsletter No.1 – 2019

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the first newsletter of 2019.

Firstly, can we wish you all a happy, peaceful and healthy new year – one that is free of the heartache of 2018.

Secondly,  a huge thanks to everyone of you who came out to any of the 26 shows we played in the Autumn in England, Scotland, Wales, The Netherlands, Germany and France.

There were some really special nights. We had a great time and would love for you to let us know which show you came to and share your thoughts here.

Here are a couple of reviews from the tour:

and some photos by Peter Saunders from The Rep, Birmingham;

We are back on the road again from next week with upcoming shows in Scotland, Norway and Northern England.

We are delighted to start the new year playing the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow.  It is always a great night whenever we play there, so if  you don’t have a ticket, don’t delay.

For our friends in and around Dundee, who can’t make it to Glasgow, there will be a special warm-up show on the 18th in Montrose.

This show is hosted by The Montrose Folk Club at The Park Hotel, John Street, Montrose Tickets can be purchased by phone 01674 830 658 or email;

We will be joined by Al Gare, Dean Beresford and Iain Sloan on these shows.

For full details about all the shows confirmed so far, both home and abroad, please visit our website.

Thanks to those of you who emailed us with your song requests. Our apologies if you asked for one but we did not get round to playing it. Keeping asking, and yes, “She Is Still My Weakness” will return!

So, if there are certain songs you would like us to play, maybe a favourite you have never heard us play before, please let us know, and we will do our best to include it.

We are also working on a few of our favourite songs by other writers for this tour so if you fancy hearing us do a cover of your choice, we’d love to hear your suggestion.

For a while now we have been meaning to add the great Jimmy Webb song “Do What You Gotta Do” to the live set. So too, ‘I’m Your Toy’ by The Flying Burrito Brothers, and ‘That Day Is Done” by Elvis Costello & Paul McCartney

Maybe ‘by the time we get to Glasgow!’

We are hoping that the red ‘studio’ light will be going on again soon. It has been too long since we recorded anything new.

Our plan was to have made the follow-up to Still Testifying in 2018 but numerous problems due to relocating from Birmingham to Manchester and then the vagaries of finding and losing and finding again somewhere to live rather took over. So we have some catching up to do.

We have actually got plans for 2 new albums to be cut this year, with at least one of them coming out in 2019.  There will be an album of all original material,  and also one made up solely of songs written by………………?

More on this to follow shortly but some of these new songs will feature live very soon.

We would love for everyone to take 6 minutes out of their busy schedule and just enjoy this video. It was lovingly created by film-maker Daniel Marigliano and deserves to be seen by many, many more people than it has so far.

Our attention spans are so short these days,  and getting anyone to watch a YouTube video for more than 2 minutes is difficult,  but this song & video are a little longer than that but it’s worth persevering with. Enjoy, and feel free to share too. Thanks.

Big love to everyone who has supported the Music Minds project by buying the album, or downloading tracks, or coming to the Islington O2 Academy concert back in October.

If you have not yet bought a copy of this fine 50 song album, at the bargain price of £10, just order here now.

It is the only place you will find our version of the gorgeous Peter Blegvad song, GOLD on CD or to stream.

The CD also includes:

We were very said to hear that the legendary – and we mean legendary – Billy Butler, hosted his last ever BBC Radio Merseyside afternoon show on Dec 28th.  We have been Billy’s guest many times and he has always been a huge supporter of our music, and so many other artists coming through town to play shows in Liverpool.  “Enjoy your retirement Billy, though hopefully you will find a new home on air on very soon”

Don’t forget to follow us on that social media. We have a love-hate relationship with it, a little like our own in many respects, but do ‘like’, ‘follow’, ‘share’  etc. That is where the gossip lands quickest, and the more embarrassing photos are seen:

OK, so thanks everyone. As ever we do appreciate your support and we  look forward to seeing you at a show in the next few weeks as we get the new year underway.

Our love, and respect,
Lou & Michael

An Extra Autumn Newsletter

Hi everyone

We hope you are all well this Autumn. Always our favourite time of year

A short, extra newsletter ahead of the upcoming shows this month and next

Thanks to all who came out to the shows in September. They were all great nights, and we have more to come.

Go to right now for details on all upcoming concerts and how to buy tickets.

Friends in The Netherlands, Germany, France and Norway we will be back to play for you too in November and January.

A few posters and show leaflets below.

The shows in London and Birmingham will feature the band, while we will be joined by Al Gare on double bass and MDC debutante Preben Raunsbjerg on guitar for the other shows.

We also team up again with Mr. Mark Billingham for a rare performance of The Other Half in Whitby

Special note that Thursday’s concert, on Oct 10th, which is World Mental Health Day is in aid of Music Minds. For more info about the charity, the album and the live show, which has a stellar line-up, go to their Facebook page or website.

We have a brand new video now streaming on YouTube.

It is a  “graphic novel” inspired video made by independent film maker Daniel Marigliano for the song Two Lane Texaco.

The song is our homage to the halcyon days of  American Radio, the iconic DJ Wolfman Jack (American Graffiti) and the sad demise of small industrial towns everywhere

Please take a look, enjoy, and if so inclined, please share across social media and with friends etc. We are thrilled with what Danny had come up with. Here are a couple of pictures from it;

We recently called into the Country Line studios for a chat and to play song or 2.

Country Line is a Global App for Country & Americana Music. It’s worth subscribing to.

To tie-in with the tour we have been calling into various radio stations up and down the country.

Here are 2 sessions that are still on-line via BBC i-player. As you can see we took a special guest to BBC Leeds.

We will also be beak on BBC Radio Merseyside from 3pm on Friday Oct 10th with our old friend Billy Butler:

OK, that’s all for now,We look forward to seeing you on the road this Autumn  And remember, book early and we will see you down the front,- Lou, Michael and Mabel

Autumn Newsletter

Hi everyone

Welcome to the Autumn newsletter.

Around our way, the long hot summer of 2018 is fading from view and a chill can be felt in the air. Perfect time then to take to the road and play some shows

All the Autumn tour dates are listed below with live ticket links.

So friends in England, Wales and Scotland, and Germany, France and The Netherlands …. you are just one click away from booking your tickets.

If possible, can we ask that you PLEASE book your tickets in advance. It is certainly cheaper but it also helps re-assure the promoters. Leaving until the last minute can sometime lead to promoters getting cold feet and wanting to cancel if advance sales are low.

Given these maybe our last shows in the UK for quite a while, we want them all to be great and busy nights. Thank you.

If there are certain songs you would like us to play, maybe a favourite you have never heard us play before, please let us know, and we will do our best to include it.

We are also working on a few of our favourite songs by other writers for this tour so if you fancy hearing us do a cover of your choice, we’d love to hear your suggestion. No promises though!

Like everyone, we were heartbroken to hear of the passing of Aretha Franklin. What can you say about an extraordinary talent and an extraordinary life? As Elvis Costello wrote in his post about her on Twitter “No words worthy”.

She was always an influence on My Darling Clementine, which some may find hard to believe given the country origins of what we do, especially our first album. But take a listen to Yours Is The Cross from Still Testifying (via Soundcloud OR on YouTube).

At around 1 min, 44 sec, those backing vocals. Sound familiar?

Blessings to Queen Aretha and thanks to Angie Pollock, and Oliver Darling for being our very own soul sisters on this song

Two projects we are currently supporting are:

1. MUSIC MINDS: An album and a concert to raise funds and awareness for mental health issues. More details about the album and the project in general here, while tickets for the London concert available here. We will be on stage for approx 20 minutes. Other acts include Chris Difford, Andy Fairweather-Low, Thomas Lang and many more

2. SINGING THROUGH THE WALL – Songs for Western Sahara: Also an album, a very beautifully packaged double album, which can be bought, or downloaded and streamed here.

Please check them out when you can and if feel so inclined to buy an album or a ticket, that would be brilliant
